Everything you need to Know about Dentures

Dentures are an effective way to restore your smile if you're missing a bunch of teeth. It is undoubtedly a cost-effective way to restore your smile if you are missing most of your teeth. Regardless of if you are getting dentures, know someone who has them, or already have dentures, you likely still have some questions.

These questions can focus on how they can improve your oral health, how to properly take care of them, what these prosthetics consist of, and if they are a good solution for your particular situation.

Here are a few answers to these questions.

What are dentures?

These devices are artificial teeth and gums that professionals create specifically for your mouth to replace missing natural teeth. There are two main types of dentures: partial and full. Partial dentures replace sets of missing teeth, while full dentures replace all of your teeth. Dentures look natural when you have them in place.

Traditionally, dentures consist of porcelain and plastics, but hard resin is also more common nowadays. While the substances used to make the artificial teeth in your dentures are very hard, these are not anywhere as strong as your natural teeth. That means you will have to replace your dentures roughly every five years due to the wear and tear that comes with everyday use.

The artificial gum part of the dentures that acts as a support structure and holds the artificial teeth in place typically consist of a flexible polymer or resin. The dentures will fit tightly on your real gum line.

Why opt for dentures over other options?

Dentures do not just improve the way your smile look if you are missing more than one tooth, these prosthetics also support the structures around your lips and cheeks. People who are missing multiple teeth, often have a hard time eating foods that require chewing.  Dentures help you eat food in a normal way and without issue. Losing the ability to chew can lead to not receiving all the nutrients you need.

Dentures are also a great solution to replace teeth that are causing you lots of pain and other health issues. The damaged teeth can be extracted and replaced with dentures. Here is a closer look at the two different types of dentures.

1. Partial dentures

Partial dentures are typically an alternative to other tooth replacement procedures if the surrounding natural teeth around the gap are not strong enough to serve as support structures for dental prosthetics like bridges. Partial dentures are also an option when the gap is too big for a bridge.

2. Full dentures

Full dentures are also known as complete dentures. Full dentures are a strong option when you are missing all of your natural teeth. The upper and lower set remain in place via suction on the corresponding gum line. An oral adhesive can also help create a tighter fit. Both types of dentures are easily removable.
