What to Expect After Getting Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are used quite often as a way to repair a tooth that has been damaged due to cavities. They can significantly improve a person’s dental health by removing the infected area and taking its place.

While dental fillings have been around for ages, there are some people who aren’t sure what to expect, which is actually a good thing! Dental fillings indicate poor dental health. With that being said, we are going to discuss what to expect after getting dental fillings. This information can be helpful to someone who has just had a dental filling or who will be having one in the near future.

What to expect after getting dental fillings

This method of dental restoration can improve one’s teeth so much so that functionality can be achieved again.

Sensitivity

It is likely that after getting dental fillings, a patient may feel a bit of sensitivity on or around the tooth that had the cavity. During a dental filling procedure, a dental drill is used to remove infected areas. This can cause the interior portion of the tooth to become tender or discomforted. Avoiding extremely cold or hot foods and beverages is best immediately after a dental filling is placed.

Minor discomfort

While the tooth is typically numbed during the filling, the numbing agents won’t last forever. Over the counter pain medications can be taken to reduce any discomfort. But it is ultimately best to avoid chewing on the tooth for a day or so while it gets back to normal. A dental filling should never induce serious pain. If this occurs, it is best to return to the dentist so that they can evaluate.

A different bite

Sometimes after a dental filling takes place, the patient may feel that their bite is different. This is because a portion of the tooth was removed during the filling process. The infected parts were drilled out and replaced with composite, also known as the filling.

If the bite is severely different, then it is best to return to the dentist so that they can evaluate the tooth. However, initial differences are normal and should be expected.

Ultimately, a restored tooth!

The number one thing to expect after getting a dental filling is a restored tooth. Dental fillings are done in order to restore damaged teeth. A restored tooth means that natural chewing can take place again. Sometimes cavities cause pain or irritation when eating, but fillings can change that.

Some cavities also change the color of the tooth. One can expect to also have an aesthetically pleasing restored tooth after the dental filling is placed. Nowadays, dental fillings are most commonly done using a white composite that makes it impossible to notice.
